Shariff: CF withheld over non-compliance
with quota

The developer of a project in the south-west district, who sold some 200
low-cost units without adhering to the bumiputra quota, has had its certification
of fitness withheld, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Shariff Omar said.
Shariff said the developer had acted irresponsibly by selling the units entirely
to one race without getting names of eligible low-cost home applicants from
the state housing department.
"For low-cost housing, developers must get the names of eligible buyers from
the department and they (developers) cannot sell the units to anyone they like,"
Shariff said.
He said the developer, whom he declined to name, had also disregarded the bumiputra
quota as stipulated in the guidelines on low-cost housing.
He was speaking to reporters after handing keys to 840 low-cost unit buyers
of Bandar Baru Teluk Kumbar, a project of the Penang Regional Development Authority
(Perda).
The general rule states that developers must allocate 45% of their units per
project to bumiputra, but the percentage varies depending on the location.
''The developer is now using the buyers to pressure the government," he said.
He said the state would trace the buyers and study the problem in detail before
taking further action against the developer.
"We don't want this to become a precedent for other developers to sell their
low-cost units without referring to the state housing department for names of
eligible buyers," he said.
