Second Homer disillusioned by
lousy work
14/08/2006 The Star
I NOTE that the Government has increased the length of stay for the
“Malaysia My Second Home” scheme from five to 10 years in an effort to
encourage more applicants.
The trouble is that all the goodwill of the Government will not compensate
for the bad word spread by disillusioned Second Homers, and there has been
too many of them of late.
Let me relate my tale of woe. I engaged this company to undertake major
renovations on my terrace house. Work started well and although I was rather
horrified at some of the local building practices, I was reasonably happy.
But from then on the situation declined rapidly, mainly because the
principal of the company seemed to lose interest. Of course, the Indonesian
workers soon realised this and their work output and quality followed suit.
The principal soon began quoting ridiculous prices for additional work at
six times the going rate and, in the end, the only time I ever saw the
principal was when he wanted to collect money.
After six months, he had only partly finished the first stage of the project
but I agreed to let him go ahead with the second stage for which I paid a
deposit.
That was the last I ever saw of him. Two months later, he left me with work
undone that had already been paid for, or work so badly done that it will
have to be re-done. How many people do you think I will recommend to
participate in the Second Home scheme?
