KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has made it easy for foreigners to set up home in the
country under the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme.
The Government has changed the stipulation that they must either apply as a
family or an individual.
The new rules simply state that applicants have either to state they are 50
and above or below 50.
The other amendment is extending the current five-year visa to 10 years.
“There are currently about 7,300 expatriates living under the MM2H programme,”
Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai told a dialogue session
with Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association Malaysia (Rehda)
yesterday.
He also said the majority of the expatriates were from China, India, Japan
and Britain.
“(The visa extension) is a way to attract those living under the MM2H
programme. If they stay longer, they would have a better reason to invest in
a property,” said Rehda president Datuk Jeffrey Ng Tiong Lip.
Under the new MM2H rules, applicants are bound to a minimum investment of
RM150,000 worth of property.
However, a few states require a minimum investment ranging from RM250,000 to
RM350,000
Lim also announced that a committee would be formed to discuss the MM2H
programme with the ministry and final details would be announced shortly.
On MAS’ decision to cut the direct flight from London to the Langkawi
International Airport, he said: “We feel the flight should be continued,
however, we should also respect MAS’ choice.
“Whether the closure is permanent or temporary is still unknown, and we will
soon have a discussion with the Transport Ministry.” |
