Foreign retiree happy with work of local contractor

I REFER to the letter, “Second Homer disillusioned by lousy work” (Sunday Star, Aug 14), from DM of Petaling Jaya.

My wife and I decided to make Malaysia our second home two years ago. We looked around and finally bought a house in Subang Jaya.

It was large and solid but needed some renovations. So we set about contacting five contractors and set out clearly in writing that we would be supplying the fittings and tiles and they were to supply the labour.

The prices varied greatly but we decided on the middle quote as the contractor seemed fair and he only used local workers.

The schedule was tight but it was finished in just four weeks. We were very pleased with his work.

Next came the seven-girl cleaning team who worked feverishly for nine hours cleaning the house and doing a very professional job.

We moved in on the 30th day and the place looked and smelt like new!

Over the next few weeks, we found a few minor things that needed attention and the contractor promptly came back each time to rectify them.

Some three months later, we found that a bathroom pipe was leaking behind the tiles in the shower and back the contractor came with a plumber and tiller to fix it without complaint or charge.

In any country, you will find poor tradesmen but there are good contractors out there who are proud of their work.

I am proud to be an avid supporter of “Malaysia My Second Home” Scheme and would ask all foreign retirees out there to come and check out what Malaysia has to offer in the way of a retirement paradise where your money will go much further and where the living is fine.
