Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon has urged Housing and Local
Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting to use his power to help
resolve the stalled Majestic Heights project in Paya Terubong.
Dr Koh said in a statement yesterday that he had made the request in
his recent letter to Ong.
He said the letter was sent in support of the appeal submitted by the
Majestic Height's Purchasers Ad-Hoc Committee to Ong to use his powers
under Section 11(1)(d) or 11(1)(e) of the Housing Developers' Act.
Under the section, the minister can direct the housing developer who
could not complete the project to present a petition to the High Court for
the winding up of his own business.
Dr Koh said the section also empowered the minister to take such action
as he might consider necessary to carry into effect the provisions of the
Act to salvage a stalled project.
Dr Koh said Ong had issued a directive on March 5 to the original
developer, Dayanusa Sdn Bhd, to revive the stalled project.
However, he said, todate the developer had not taken any step to comply
with the directive and was unlikely to do so as no work had started yet.
"Furthermore, ,the court petitions by the buyers of the project to wind
up its business will be time consuming. Hence, the buyers will be
subjected to a long wait for the project to be revived," he said.
Dr Koh pledged to give his full support to Ong should he decide to use
his powers to resolve the problem.
The Majestic Heights project, launched in 1995, offers 2,955 housing
units, 55 shoplots and 22 light industries.
It stalled when the developer faced financial and management problems
in 1998.
