Work to revive the stalled Taman Terubong Indah (Majestic Heights)
Phase 1 project is progressing well since it kicked off at the beginning
of this month.
Developer Wira Properties Management Sdn Bhd project director Teh Kian
Chong said work has been progressing on schedule and two show units were
almost completed to be handed over to the purchasers’ committee.
“We have done some site and drainage clearing and now, we are checking
the floor tiling, windows, electrical switches and so on in every unit for
rectification work,” he told reporters when representatives from the
purchasers’ committee and liquidator Deloitte KassimChan visited the site
yesterday.
Teh was refuting claims by the state DAP organising secretary Danny Law
that construction work has not been carried out since the revival was
launched on Aug 8.
Noting that the revival work has to commence in stages, Teh said there
would not be any heavy machinery at the site as most of the work during
the initial three to four months only involves building and unit
rectification work.
“Heavy machinery will only be used towards the end of the period for
the infrastructure,” he said, adding that about 20 construction workers
were involved in the initial work.
Teh also expressed confidence that the revival would be completed in
five months as scheduled.
Answering the DAP’s question on the transparency of the tendering
process for the project revival, Deloitte KassimChan corporate
reorganisation group senior manager Christopher Lim said a tendering
committee was set up comprising representatives from the liquidator,
ad-hoc purchasers’ committee and technical consultants to oversee the
process.
“Every major step taken has always been conveyed to the purchasers
during the regular purchasers’ forums,” he said, adding that it would not
be practical to have all the 1,555 purchasers present during the tender
interviews.
“Since the purchasers’ committee represents about 85% of the
purchasers, it has been given the mandate to be their spokesmen,” he said.
Purchasers’ committee executive adviser S. L. Chang said interested
purchasers could meet the committee members to view all the documents,
minutes of the meetings and account statements at Bayan Baru MP Wong Kam
Hoong’s service centre in Paya Terubong at 9.30pm every Thursday.
A monitoring committee comprising representatives from the purchasers’
committee, liquidator, Penang Municpal Council, Housing and Local Government Ministry and technical consultant, has also been set up to
supervise the construction work fortnightly, Chang added.
“We hope parties will not come up with any more negative news to
discourage the purchasers because we have worked hard for the past four
years to revive the project,” he said.
The two show units should be open for all the purchasers to view by the
middle of next month, he added.
Launched in 1995, the four phases of the Majestic Heights project,
comprising 2,955 housing units, 55 shoplots and 22 light industrial units,
is the country’s largest single abandoned housing project.
