Come forward, panel urges 331 housebuyers

The 331 purchasers of Phase 1 of the Taman Terubong Indah (Majestic
Heights) project yet to come forward should change their tidak apa
(indifferent) attitude or risk losing everything at the end of the day,
said the Phase 1 purchasers’ ad-hoc committee.
Committee executive adviser S. L. Chang said if those in this group
continued dragging their feet over the matter, they would have to face the
consequences of adopting this stand.
“The liquidators can take purchasers to court to compel them to pay
(the additional amount needed to revive the project) or sell their units
at whatever price they deem fit,” he said yesterday at a press conference.
He said the 331, or some 21% of the 1,555 purchasers, should recognise
that the present move to revive the project was the “real thing.”
“This is not an eyewash as the project is already in the hands of the
liquidator, but the revival will have to involve participation from the
purchasers themselves.
“If it’s not successful, the purchasers will only have themselves to
blame. It is either this or losing everything at the end of the day,” he
said.
Launched in 1995, the Majestic Heights project is the country’s largest
single abandoned housing project, consisting of 2,955 residential units
(under Phases 1, 2A, 2B and 3A), 55 shoplots and 22 light industrial
units.
On Oct 16, the High Court here ordered that the developer be wound up
and Deloitte Kassim Chan was appointed liquidator.
Chang said work on the project was originally supposed to resume in
March but the committee was pushing the liquidator to bring the date
forward.
“We can go ahead even if not all purchasers have come forward, but 100%
participation will simplify things and mean that we get our units
earlier,” he said.
The committee will be holding a forum to update purchasers on the
revival of the project at the Caring Society Complex at 2pm on Feb 3, with
registration of purchasers from 12.30pm.
Chang said the liquidator would also announce at the forum the extra
amount purchasers had to pay for the revival process.
The committee, he added, was working with the liquidator to bring down
the sums due to the relevant government agencies and utility companies in
a bid to reduce what purchasers would have to fork out.
